Why Inclusion Is Not Enough Conversation
As the world around us transforms and becomes increasingly more diverse, nonprofit, community, and business leaders face unprecedented challenges and opportunities to build enriching work and community environments where everyone has a chance to succeed; where all human experiences are valued and leveraged. Whether the goal is to build a competitive advantage or a more equitable society, our leadership must evolve to understand new realities and perspectives.
This conversation will explore the limits of diversity and inclusion and the unintended consequences of inclusion without understanding history, culture, and their impact on the outcomes we seek to achieve. We will reflect on outcome-determinant questions: Can we be inclusive without expanding our perspective? Can we build prosperity for our community while excluding others? Can inclusion exist without equity?
We will examine how “lived experiences”, when considered in an authentic, dignifying way, become pivotal to creating communities where every voice is valued, every idea is given opportunity to flourish, and everyone can have an expectation of success. Our session will provide practical strategies to foster an expansive culture of openness where people from different experiences, backgrounds, and abilities are empowered to contribute their unique perspective towards a common vision forward.
