Shawn Spann Edwards is a diversity and inclusion, human resources and management professional and professor.She is the CEO of Solutions by Shawn Edwards, LLC, a consulting practice focused on providing human resources, inclusion and culture strategies to its clients.Ms. Edwards is also the Chief Diversity Officer for The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina and is responsible for the diversity, inclusion and equity efforts and programs for the institution. Additionally, Shawn serves as adjunct faculty at The Citadel, Trident Technical College and the College of Charleston.
Shawn serves as a board member for the YWCA of Greater Charleston, where she chairs the Governance Committee, an advisory board member for Palmetto Warrior Connection and the board chair for The Autism Platform Project; a nonprofit focused on creating work and career opportunities for individuals with autism. She is also a member of the Diversity Council for the SC Chamber of Commerce, an Honorary Commander for Joint Base Charleston, a member of Explore Charleston‚Äôs Heart for Hospitality Advisory Board, and Temple University‚Äôs Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiative Academic External Advisory Board.Mrs. Edwards is a former board member of the SC Society for Human Resource Management (SC SHRM) and Palmetto SHRM (formerly Tri-County Human Resource Mgt. Association).She holds the designation of Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certified by the Human Resources Certification Institute and is a SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP).Ms. Edwards is a mentor to many and has served as a volunteer for several organizations in the Charleston area speaking at various schools, career fairs and organizations on a variety of topics.
Shawn earned an MBA with a Human Resource Management concentration and a Graduate Certificate in College Teaching and Learning from Walden University.She has also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Management from Webster University and an Associate of Arts in Fashion Merchandising from Bauder College.Currently, Ms. Edwards is a doctoral candidate at Temple University, where her research focus is on nonprofit board governance and the barriers to diversity and inclusion.
Shawn was previously awarded the Innovator Under 35 Award by the Bethune-Leonard Section of the National Council of Negro Women Inc. and was Webster University Charleston Campus 2009 Student of the Year and the 2010 Young Alumni of the Year.She was inducted into the National Honor Society for Business Schools Delta Mu Delta (DMD) and served as the inaugural Vice President of the Charleston Chapter on Webster University‚Äôs campus.Shawn is a certified trainer with certifications in Polarity Thinking, BRIDGES to Success and DISC.Shawn is a facilitator for the Charleston Illumination Project, a 2013 fellow of Furman University‚Äôs Riley Institute Diversity Leaders Initiative, was recognized as one of the Charleston Regional Business Journal‚Äôs 2015 Forty Under 40, is a 2006 graduate of Leadership Charleston, a 2016 graduate of Leadership South Carolina and the recipient of the Fall 2017 Spirit of the Citadel Presidential Award.
Shawn is a long-term member of Christian Praise & Worship Center, located in the Accabee section of North Charleston.Under the leadership of Lonnie M. Palmer, Shawn is an active member serving in many capacities including the ministerial staff.Originally from Jersey City, NJ, Shawn resides in Charleston, SC. with her husband Derrick J. Edwards, together they have five children and one grandchild.
