Our Allies for Good are ready to have the hard conversations, to do the work needed to better understand and embrace racial equity and are excited to offer a comprehensive, immersive learning experience held in a brave space with the support of others.

To make sure we’re all using the same language, here are the definitions we’re using:

Racial Equity 
Racial equity is the condition that would be achieved if one’s racial identity no longer predicted, in a statistical sense, how one fares. When we use the term, we are thinking about racial equity as one part of racial justice, and thus we also include work to address the root causes of inequities not just their manifestation. This includes the elimination of policies, practices, attitudes and cultural messages that reinforce differential outcomes by race or fail to eliminate them.

Authentically bringing traditionally excluded individuals and/or groups into processes, activities, and decision/policymaking in a way that shares power.

What is the 2020 Summit theme?

Our state’s annual gathering of Allies for good is heading in a new direction this year. Facing Race Together will offer an immersive learning experience to aid attendees and their organizations in better understanding and tackling issues of race, equity and inclusion. Our goals are to help attendees:

  • Understand SC’s history and the embedded systems of advantage and disadvantage, and how they continue to create inequities our state;
  • Commit to change from the inside out, examining their own organizations’ practices through a race, equity and inclusion lens;
  • Have increased confidence to hold courageous conversations;
  • Gain tools and resources that support REI efforts in their organizations: and
  • Connect with groups, coalitions and experts engaged in this work.

Why is the 2020 Summit about race?

Nonprofit leaders have a responsibility to understand how deep racial inequities and systems designed to disadvantage people of color, negatively impact their work and the lives of their clients. At the largest convening of nonprofits in the state, we have the opportunity to promote a shared understanding of how South Carolina’s history and the embedded systems of advantage and disadvantage continue to influence society, creating barriers to the achievement of all South Carolinians. The 2020 Summit will focus on courageous leadership and will challenge attendees to work to dismantle systems in their own organizations and communities, that knowingly or not, may be interfering with the success of their work and the outcomes for their clients.

Why is there no one-day rate for the 2020 Summit?

The 2020 Summit is deliberately designed as a comprehensive experience; this approach differs from previous Summits that had a more traditional format where attendees could easily drop in and out since the topics were not connected. We felt it was important for attendees to commit to the entire event and took that into account when setting the cost of registration.

Facing Race Together is a two-day immersive journey that focuses on “why” this work is so important and the “hows” of putting the work into action. Beginning on Wednesday our local tours, affinity group gatherings and keynote address by Dr. Jennifer Eberhardt will set the stage for our time together on Thursday and Friday. From establishing a shared understanding of South Carolina’s history to digging deeper into the institutions that support inequities across our state, this year’s Summit will allow individuals to pace their learning by selecting impactful sessions that meet their current needs. We have designed a Summit that offers attendees the opportunity to stay focused on their personal journeys while learning together and building relationships with their colleagues from across South Carolina.

How and when will I select concurrent sessions?

Each attendee will design their own journey by selecting four concurrent sessions when registering for the Summit. When selecting sessions, attendees should consider how they want to focus their time. Our Summit sessions are designed to focus on one’s personal, organizational or community commitment to race, equity and inclusion.

Prior to registering for the Summit, we recommend that you review session descriptions and goals to understand the benefits of attending each session.

Will I leave the Summit with strategies to implement?

Yes. In planning the 2020 Summit, our Program Committee was very intentional in selecting a variety of sessions for our attendees. Some of our sessions will focus on the “Why” behind incorporating diversity, equity and inclusion into your work. The majority of our sessions are designed around the “How” to offer you implementation strategies. Many sessions highlight organizations from around our state who are already engaged in the work.

Will the 2020 Summit offer tours and site visits?

Yes. Columbia is a wonderful host location for our Summit and you will have the opportunity to register for local tours and site visits which will be offered Wednesday, March 4 from 2–5 p.m. Space is limited so register early to reserve your space for the following:

Will there be time for reflection during the 2020 Summit?

In addition, all attendees are invited to visit our Decompression Lounge sponsored by The Richland Library Friends and Foundation located off the Atrium in the hotel.

What is First Thursday on Main? Will I be able to participate?

On the first Thursday of each month, businesses in downtown Columbia participate in First Thursday on Main by keeping their doors open late, offering a mix of specials, events, entertainment, and more! On March 5, after attending the Allies for Good Annual Gathering (5:30 – 7 p.m.) at the Columbia Museum of Art, you will have the opportunity to join the First Thursday festivities with your Together SC friends.

Will I have the opportunity to connect with business partners and other organizations that serve nonprofits?

Yes. On Thursday, March 5, you are invited to visit our Nonprofit Marketplace located in the Atrium of the Marriott between sessions and during the lunch break.

Will the 2020 Summit offer any fitness opportunities?

Yes. We want you to stay fit while attending the 2020 Summit. In addition to the fitness facility at the hotel, we will offer on March 5 and March 6 from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Rise and Shine Yoga on Boyd Plaza outside of the Columbia Museum of Art, which is only a few short steps from the Marriott. We will also offer a Blue Bike SC Tour of Public Art on March 5 from 7-8 a.m. Space is limited so register early.

What is your cancellation policy?

Requests for refunds must be made via e-mail and must be received at least 30 days prior to the Summit. The refund will be credited back to the credit or debit card that was used in the original purchase, minus a $25 processing fee. There will be no refunds for cancellation after 30 days or for “No Shows.” Substitutions may be made by email stating the name of the person and the reason for the substitution.

Do I need to sign up for sessions and special events?

Yes, you will. Registered attendees will be asked to choose breakout sessions in advance and RSVP for site visits and the reception. We want to make sure we have sufficient space for your sessions and food for events. You will receive a reminder of which sessions you signed up for when you register on-site at the Summit. Are there session evaluations?

Yes, and we want your feedback! Your comments will greatly influence next year’s Summit design and content. Information regarding the evaluations will be posted at the beginning of the Summit.

Are there additional hotel accommodations available if the host hotel is sold out?

Columbia is poised and ready for Summit. Everyone will most certainly have a comfortable place to rest their head after a busy day of learning, networking and having fun. In addition to the Marriott, we have a room block available at the Sheraton next door. We will also have overflow rooms available at Aloft.

Is Wi-Fi available during the conference?

Yes, Summit attendees will have access to complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel’s meeting facilities. Please keep in mind that when hundreds of people are using Wi-Fi at the same time, connection speeds can be hindered.

Which meals will be included with the 2020 Summit registration?

Yes, meals and snacks are provided. On Thursday, a hot breakfast, snacks and buffet lunch with be provided. On Friday, a hot breakfast will be provided.

Do you provide accommodations for attendees with special needs or requests?

Will transportation be provided for site visits?

Yes, transportation will be provided. However, advance sign up is required for site visits.

Is there a business center at the hotel?

Yes, there is a business center that will be available for Summit attendees.

What if I need to ship something to the hotel?

You can ship boxes to the hotel with an arrival of no more than three days prior to the event. When you arrive to the hotel, you can ask the front desk to assist you in getting your boxes. The Summit staff will also be available to assist in locating any shipments. All shipments must include “Together SC / 2020 SC Nonprofit Summit” if you are shipping conference-related material.
