Matt is an Upstate native who returned to Greenville in March 2020 and serves as the Artistic Director at South Carolina Children’s Theatre. Prior to joining SCCT, he was the General Manager at Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis, the nation’s leading theatre for multigenerational audiences. While at CTC, Matt negotiated deals with major movie studios to adapt material into stage musicals. He also negotiated deals with playwrights, commercial producers, and underlying rights holders for the creation of adaptations and new work for the stage. Before his time at CTC, Matt served as the Associate Producing Director at Seattle Repertory Theatre where he worked on the world premiere, pre-Broadway production of Come From Away and the first regional production of David Byrne’s musical, Here Lies Love. Matt founded a temporary theater company to produce two premiere productions as part of Seattle’s city-wide celebration, Seattle Center Next50. Matt’s 2015 production of Into the Woods was honored with a Seattle Gregory Award for Best Musical. His work has been seen at Seattle Children’s Theatre, Village Theatre, 5th Avenue Theatre, and many others. During his time in Seattle and Minneapolis, Matt participated in a wide array of DEIB training. He is a believer that culture is a birthright and that art belongs to all. With this vision in mind, Matt has worked alongside SCCT Executive Director Debbie Bell to prioritize DEIB work in all aspects of SCCT’s programming to make sure every child in the Upstate has access to the transformational power of theatre.
